The Elantra has improved with each generation, and the newest model offers the best bang for the buck yet. The base engine is a 147-hp inline-four with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The fuel-sipping Eco pairs a turbo 1.4-liter inline-four with a seven-speed auto—we saw 43 mpg in our testing. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and heated seats are available. Optional safety tech includes automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. Vague steering is our biggest complaint.
